What is Yoga?

In yoga, there is a pose for everything in the world, whether it is an animal, a tree, or an airplane, and we can create these things with our body. Many years ago, the ancient yogis lived in the mountains, the caves, and the forests of India. They observed their environment, and saw how nature moved in perfect harmony. They imitated the movements of the animals, the trees, the mountains, and even the movements of the stars, and created this wonderful practice that is called Yoga.

Why should I do Yoga?

First off, Yoga is FUN! It makes us feel good as we breathe, stretch and create different poses together. We learn how to trust ourselves by building our inner strength, coordination, balance and control. Yoga expands our own body awareness and awareness of others while encouraging cooperation and teamwork. We may feel more confident by accomplishing new poses and standing a little taller. Yoga helps teach us self-acceptance and self-love. Yoga can make us stronger and more flexible while nourishing creativity, as it is an exercise for our body and mind! We can learn all kinds of new things about the world (nature, animals and the environment) as we play and exercise together! Yoga helps us relax….ahhhhhhhh

What if it hurts?

If it hurts, stop. Nothing you do in yoga should hurt you. Yoga is meant to make our bodies feel good and to relax. If something does not feel right, look to see if you are doing it the way it is shown and/or just try it a different way! Invent your own pose that feels better! It is important to listen to what our bodies are telling us especially when trying a new physical activity. In doing partner yoga make sure you are trusting your partner and communicating when something feels too much or you would like a little more of a stretch.
